500 dead from Typhoon Morakot, Taiwan's president says
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Floods and mudslides unleashed by Typhoon Morakot last weekend have killed about 500 people on the island, Taiwan's president said Friday as he called on rescue crews to step up their efforts.
Morakot destroyed the homes of 7,000 people and caused agricultural and property damage in excess of 50 billion New Taiwan dollars ($1.5 billion), President Ma Ying-jeou said at a national security conference, the first called since he took office 15 months ago.
He called it the most severe damage to the island in 50 years.
Morakot typhoon: rescuers save 700 people, thousands still missing
Taipei (AsiaNews / Agencies) - About 700 people in a mountainous area south of Taiwan are alive. Official sources of the army confirmed the news explaining that the villagers managed to get to higher ground "before their houses were buried” by a river of mud.
But thousands of people remain missing as a result of the passage of typhoon Morakot and tropical storm Etau, which struck the island of Taiwan, China and other parts of Asia last weekend, killing more than 100 people.

On the south side of the road, Provincial Highway 27, there are hot meals, the succor of Buddhist monks and, after some careful driving across soggy roads, access to the rest of Taiwan.

CHISHAN, Taiwan — As the rain tapered off and the sun briefly appeared, helicopters resumed their search on Wednesday morning for scores of people believed missing in landslides and flooding that hit these rugged mountains of southern Taiwan last weekend.
